Long-tailed silverfish
Identification
Adult long-tailed silverfish is approximately 10-12 millimeters long without sensory horns and tails, but they can grow up to 18 millimeter. Its larvae looks very similar, only it is much smaller. Long-tailed silverfish looks very similar to silverfish, which is even more familiar in Finland. Long-tailed silverfish silverish and quite dark. Generally, much darker that silverfish. However, it is significantly larger and hairier and has longer tails. Its 3 back tails move to very different directions. It takes about 2 years for long-tailed silverfish to grow from nymph to adult. Speed depends on its living conditions. Long-tailed silverfish can live up to 8 years.
Long-tailed silverfish is fast and thus moves quickly from one apartment to another.
Long-tailed silverfish are very omnivorous. It will eat breadcrumbs and dead insects alike. Long-tailed silverfish live and are generally active at dusk, but they are not as photo-phobic as silverfish. As a rule, long-tailed silverfish are found in small crevices and in dwellings. Silverfish are generally observed and thrive in damp areas, but unlike silverfish, long-tailed silverfish can also survive in dry conditions. In housing estates, long-tailed silverfish uses penetrations of electrical pipework, radiator pipes and drains to spread.
