Crawling insects

Despite all our preventive measures, all sorts of small and slightly larger insects are crawling into our homes and properties. What these crawling insects have in common is that they come indoors for shelter, warmth or food. Some insects are harmless, but unfortunately some of them cause varying degrees of damage or even destruction when they get indoors.

For example, foodborne pathogens live in food and the places where it is stored. This means, for example, that it is necessary to combat ants that have entered the dwelling. Textile pests, on the other hand, destroy natural materials such as fur, wool and feathers. Various pests can enter the washrooms, for example through the sewage system. Houseplants can also be plagued by pests. As for crawling insects, professional pest control is always necessary, especially when it comes to bedbugs and cockroaches.

Pests that have entered the property can be controlled by various methods. However, species identification is always the very first thing to find out in order to start effective insect control. It is possible to identify crawling insects by their tactile characteristics. The identification chart below lists the most common crawling insects found in Finland, which are considered pests. Identifying the right species is important to determine the need for insect control in the first place and then the right method of control.

If you are having a difficulty by identifying a pest on your property, please send us an accurate picture or sample and we will do the identification for you. Also tell us where you found the insects in question.

The top menu and the links below will take you to a page that describes in more detail both the crawling insect identified and the control measures required.
